TJ and Molly Gionet: A Firm Foundation

Molly and TJ Gionet both grew up knowing God’s word and having trust in His plan for their lives. Their story shares their faith and complete surrender during life’s challenges, surprises, and blessings. For Molly, growing up in a Christian home and upbringing meant continuing to grow in her faith and follow Jesus’ teachings. Her family legacy prepared her for the challenges that she would face in her life, taught her how to live in a biblical marriage with a strong foundation, and how to disciple her own children to know and love Jesus. TJ opened his heart to Jesus in middle school, but experienced a few years of worldly rebellion in college. Ultimately, his love for God brought him back to God’s teachings and enabled him to be a strong husband and father.  During some of their earliest married years, Molly and TJ learned to navigate life’s tribulations by leaning on their faith and trust in God’s plan for their lives. They continued the path God called them to even with doubts and dismays. TJ, Molly, and their children, Tucker (3), and Annie (1), have lived in Cody for a few years and continue to grow in their unshakeable faith.   Read their story to see how God guided them to Cody, Wyoming and continues to work in their lives, marriage, and discipleship of their young children.

Molly grew up with a strong foundation in her Christian faith.  From her earliest memories, she was connected in her family’s church, community, and youth groups.  She spent her days with Young Life and summer camps. “I grew up in a Christian household, we went to church regularly; I accepted Jesus into my life at summer camp. We were the good kids; we didn’t get into trouble.” Molly’s dedication and perseverance to God’s word set the foundation for her resilience and steady confidence in life.

TJ and Molly first met when they were only thirteen years old, although their parents, teachers in the same school district, knew each other before they were even born.  “He was my first boyfriend at thirteen, but we only dated for a month.”

“She broke up with me,” TJ interjected.  They both learned that their relationship would have a better foundation in friendship and their faith in Christ.  They started dating again a few years later in high school and through college.  Molly and TJ’s bond would bring them through some of their later challenges and encourage them to keep their focus on their faith in God during crucial young adult years when so many Christians stray from their faith.

TJ’s background also had a foundation in the Christian faith, but it would take him a few more years to truly gain trust and confidence in God’s plan.  “We didn’t necessarily go to church all the time…I wouldn’t say we were strangers to the church, but I wouldn’t say we were frequent in the church either.” TJ still attended youth groups and summer camps, and recalls accepting Jesus around middle school at a summer camp during a youth group session.  “It was the cool thing to do…everyone raise your hand!”  TJ accepted Jesus that day, but quickly learned in high school that faith and trust in Jesus means a lot more than only raising your hand.

During their high school years, both Molly and TJ were involved in Young Life and discipleship camps which encouraged their faith to grow introspectively.  It wasn’t until later that they both learned that Christ needs to be the firm foundation in their marriage as well.  This realization came with time and maturity.  “At 16, 17, 18, Jesus isn’t a focus in a relationship at that point,” Molly shared.  “We did all the good things, we were the good kids.”  Molly and TJ’s consistent involvement with their youth program and community had an influential effect on their decision-making. Even though they were too young to realize the profound impact Christ was having in their lives, the positive foundation for their marriage was being set for them before they even realized how important it would be in the future.

Molly and TJ both attended different colleges in California, and their time apart would be the first test of their love and trust in each other and in God.  Molly attended a private Christian college, while TJ attended the California Maritime Academy. “My faith always stayed front and center in my education,” Molly expressed.  “We had Bible classes, chapel three times a week, so this is where our paths started to deviate a little bit.” TJ had a more “rowdy” college experience at the Maritime Academy where his faith wasn’t always put first. TJ started to test the waters with the more culturally typical college experiences including partying.  The first couple of years of college were challenging for both of them.

During their sophomore year of college, they spent around nine months where they didn’t communicate and started dating other people.  Even during this more challenging time, they never forgot each other.  “I always knew I was going to marry him, from the time I was 16. So that was hard, the waiting…” Molly divulged.  She stayed focused and continued to pray for TJ, and the summer before their Junior year in college Molly and TJ reconnected.  They had a heart-to-heart, and Molly confronted TJ about his choices and his stray from God.  “You probably don’t remember it that way at all,” Molly quipped.

“Yeah I do,” TJ shot back with a big, sheepish smile.  Molly and TJ were married a few years after college in 2014.

"We really had to put our faith and trust in God," Molly declared. They had a full life settled in Washington, with good jobs, a beautiful home, and the birth of their son, Tucker. By all accounts, it didn't seem like anything would need to change.

Some of their most faith-defining moments started early in their marriage when TJ lost his dad.  TJ leaned on God and His understanding to help him through his grief.  “I don’t know how else you get through something like that unless you do have God to lean on” TJ affirmed.  It was probably the first moment in his life where he had to acknowledge that God was in control.  TJ’s faith allowed him to trust in God during this difficult time, and he recalled not reacting in a negative way or blaming God for the loss of his dad. He didn’t push God away in anger, if anything, his experience brought him closer to his love and reliance on God.

Another forceful moment that brought Molly and TJ both closer to God and helped them realize that their marriage foundation required a strong faith together was their move to Cody from Washington.  “We really had to put our faith and trust in God,” Molly declared.  They had a full life settled in Washington, with good jobs, a beautiful home, and the birth of their son, Tucker.  By all accounts, it didn’t seem like anything would need to change.  Molly and TJ’s families were well-known and respected in their Washington community.

“When my dad passed away, most of the community was there to support us…we were very connected to that community” TJ shared. They were both blessed with a community that is similar to Cody, where people were interconnected and everyone knew everyone, where going to the grocery store was a reunion of sorts.

When 2020 and Covid swept the nation, TJ’s job was eliminated.  Even before his job was terminated, the Gionets hoped that events wouldn’t come to that point.  They started to look for other options, but were living in denial, thinking that momentous change in their lives wouldn’t really happen. “The thought that  we would move away from all our family and friends when we have an 8 month old is absurd,” Molly observed.  Eventually it became apparent that their lives truly were changing and “God opened all the doors to lead us here.” Molly and TJ feel that God was leading them to Cody so they could set roots in the community and raise their family here.  It took faith and trust in God to sell their property and move several states away to start over.  They felt God’s call to leave all they had known before, and put their full trust in God’s plan for their lives.  This open and accepting attitude towards God’s plan guided their marriage through these life-altering events.

“The only thing that I thought would move us back (to Washington) would be if a member of my family gets a terminal illness,” Molly stated.  Shortly after the Gionets moved to Cody, Molly learned that her dad was diagnosed with brain cancer.  Molly recalled asking, “God, what are you trying to tell me?  Is this a sign I’m supposed to move back?”  Molly ultimately felt that she was being told to stay put, that Cody is their home now and where they’re supposed to be. “I felt very peaceful about moving out here.” Molly’s dad continues to battle brain cancer and the family has been able to travel back and forth several times to visit Molly’s family during these events. Molly’s faith in God’s plan for their family has kept her confidence that they are exactly where they should be.

Now that Molly and TJ have had a few years to settle in Cody, they’re looking forward to continuing to establish their roots for their own children.  Outpost Community Church has helped them through their move to a completely new place.   They continue to settle in and are happily awaiting the build of their family home out on the South Fork. They have been establishing several facets of involvement to serve the community including TJ’s job at the airport, Molly’s job as a V.A. nurse, their involvement at their kids’ school, and TJ’s lacrosse coaching.

The Gionets have lived in Cody for 2.5 years and they’ve established a strong community and network of friends through church and personal connections. They both agree that having a firm foundation in Christ is the priority. “Once you have kids, it’s not just about your faith and your walk with God, now you’re discipling your children to have that same firm foundation and trust in God. It’s a new role.”  Molly and TJ know they have found the best place to accomplish this in Outpost and Cody.  They’ve been able to continue to trust in God’s plan and foundation in their lives and establish connections to a community that welcomes them whole-heartedly.

"He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God."
